A Tale of Confusing Couponing: How We Ended Up With An Unplanned 5 Cent Moneymaker at Smith's (Expired)

We try to keep the couponing deals we get simple, so you can easily get the same deals for your family or to donate in your community. Here's a tale of our should have been simple, but wasn't, and ended up being an unplanned 5 cent moneymaker trip to Smith's.

Just a reminder that when you're couponing, sometimes things don't work out as planned. Be patient and don't be afraid to speak with the Customer Service Desk for assistance/clarification.

Here's our story:

Using a combination of Smith's e-coupons (which you add to your Smith's card in the Smith's app) and a newspaper coupon, we planned to use Smith's Buy 5, Save $5 sale to save big! The great thing about Smith's Buy 5, Save $5 sale is that you can mix and match items in the sale in multiples of 5 to get $1 off each item at checkout.

Here is what we planned-
Buy 2 Colgate Total SF toothpaste - $1.99 each when you buy 5 = $3.98
Use $4 off 2 Colgate Optic White or Total SF toothpaste Smith's digital coupon = -$4.00
Buy 2 Suave Professionals shampoo - $.99 each when you buy 5 = $1.98
Use $1 off 2 Suave Professionals shampoo or conditioner = -$1.00
Buy 1 Crest Pro-Health 3oz+ toothpaste - $1.99 when you buy 5 = 1.99
Use $2 off 1 Crest 3oz+ from the 2/25 P&G BrandSaver newspaper insert = -$2.00
For a cost of just 95 cents at checkout

However, at checkout the total was $1.95, so something didn't work right.

Because we didn't want to hold up the line, we took our receipt over to the Customer Service Desk where a very nice lady looked over the receipt and explained that the digital coupon applied to the Suave, but the Buy 5, Save $5 promotion didn't work on the Suave. We showed her the pic of the Suave on the shelf showing it was part of the promotion and she said she'd credit the promotion back to our method of payment. She quickly did so and we left.

Now in writing this post and looking at our receipt, somehow the $1 off 2 Suave digital coupon took $1 off each Suave shampoo rather than $1 off total. Then Customer Service credited us back $1 on each Suave shampoo for the Buy 5, Save $5 promotion, which actually ended up giving us a 5 cent moneymaker.

So that's our tale of a confusing couponing trip. That Suave digital coupon took off more than expected, which worked in our benefit in the end.
